ACOUSTICS2008/2214 Cochlear nonlinearity in normal-hearing subjects as inferred psychophysically and from distortion-product otoacoustic emissions

چکیده
The aim was to investigate the correlation between estimates of compression ratio, compression threshold, and cochlear gain for normal-hearing subjects inferred from temporal masking curves (TMC) and distortion-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAEs) input-output (I/O) curves. Special care was given to reduce the influence of DPOAE fine structure on the I/O curves. Data were collected for 10 subjects and for cochlear places with characteristic frequencies (CFs) of 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz. Except at 4 kHz, little correlation was found between ratio estimates obtained with the two methods. One reason is that the DPOAE I/O curves show plateaus or dips which result in unexpectedly high compression estimates. Moderately high correlation was found between the compression-threshold estimates obtained with the two methods, although DPOAE-based values were systematically lower than those based on the TMCs. Both methods confirmed that compression ratio and threshold are approximately constant across the CF range considered. Cochlear gain could be estimated from TMCs only and it was found to increase slightly with increasing CF. It is discussed that DPOAE I/O curves may be inappropriate to infer precise individual nonlinear cochlear characteristics in normal-hearing listeners, particularly at low CFs [

متن کاملEvaluation of Distortion and Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emission in Tinnitus Patients with Normal Hearing
Introduction: Tinnitus is a perception of sound without external source. The exact etiology of tinnitus is not fully understood, although some researchers believe that the condition usually starts in the cochlea. The aim of this study was to determine the potential contribution of outer hair cell dysfunction to chronic tinnitus, by application of Distortion-Product Evoked Otoacoustic Emission (...

The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of tinnitus and total effect of tinnitus and the hearing loss function on the distortion product otoacoustic emission. Tinnitus patients were selected to exhibit normal hearing and such tinnitus patients who exhibited the increasing or notch-like sensorineural hearing loss. It was found that the cochlear hearing activity expressed in terms of...

OBJECTIVE To investigate whether cochlear involvement is an extraintestinal manifestation in patients with ulcerative colitis. METHOD Forty-four ulcerative colitis patients and 44 age-matched healthy subjects were included in the study. Pure tone and speech audiometry, and distortion product otoacoustic emission tests were performed on all participants. The audiometric test results were compa...

UNLABELLED Exposure to loud music is increasing among young people, and so could be the number of hearing impairment cases in this population. Otoacoustic emission tests are sensitive in capturing the effects of exposure to noise, and allow the detection of early cochlear disorders. OBJECTIVE This study aims to look into the prevalence rates of injuries to outer hair cells in a population of ...
